Our school does not have a recycling program. Each day pounds and bags of recyclable materials are thrown away. My students would like to change this bad habit and have an effect on not only our school but our world.
This school year, I have had the pleasure of working with and teaching 25 very eager second-grade students.
Most of the students had never been a part of a class with more than 12 students. Due to cuts in the district budget, all of the students were put together in my classroom and I couldn't imagine not being the teacher of a single one of them!
We live in a rural area where most families enjoy living simple lives. While working with their families, on their home farms, students are constantly finding new reasons to appreciate nature. Now, they want to show their appreciation by starting a recycling program in our school.
My Project
We are requesting 18 blue recycling bins which will be used to collect recyclable materials throughout our school building. I believe these recycling bins will light a fire in my students for reaching beyond themselves to make a difference in our world.
They will be an example to both younger and older children by serving them, through collection of the recyclable materials placed in the bins. I also think that this project will have an effect on the staff and students in our building, allowing them to see the amount of everyday waste that can be recycled.
Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." If you want to see young people learn to love the Earth, and not harm the Earth, help my class start that change by donating to our project!
