My Students

I am an Early Childhood teacher who works at a high risk Project Lift School that has mostly minorities and ESL (English as a second language) students. My school is a PreK - 8th grade school in an urban area of North Carolina and nearly all of our students are living in poverty. I work with a selection of First grade and Middle School Special Education students in Science, Social Studies and Reading. Many of my students are below grade level readers and ESL students who have physical and cognitive disability difficulties learning complex material, vocabulary, fluency, sight word recognition, reading issues and many other learning issues. The students I work with are trying to succeed while coping with a variety of learning, speech, physical and cognitive disabilities. My students are all working at different levels when it comes to reading and comprehension. Despite all these challenges, they are here every day and working hard to be the best that they can be! They are trying to catch up with the other students their age and grade level while also trying not to fall further behind.

My Project

To conserve Earth it’s important to teach students about Recycling. Students absorb information and should have environmental awareness. Students should learn the causes and effects of recycling. This lesson will educate about recycling, the importance of recycling, what can be recycled, and other environmental issues like destroying the Rainforest, habitats, and water preservation. I’ll teach earth is their home, and deserves care and respect and their daily actions can affect earth in a positive or negative way.

This project explains and reinforces the importance of recycling, the environment and reusable water bottles that can be washed and refilled.

Students don’t understand the impact bottled water has on our environment. I’ll show movie The Story of Bottled Water, which is a good way to incorporate media literacy and promote discussion regarding their environmental actions. I’ll read The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle: A Story About Recycling, and I Can Save the Earth!, and other recycling and environmental books. I’ll use the ipad mini along with the ones in the classroom for students to explore interactive websites about recycling and watch individual and group clips and digital stories about recycling like Magic school bus ("In the Rain Forest"), and Berenstain Bears (go green episode). It hooks to the Smartboard to watch clips and movies as a class. Students can watch Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest, and Once Upon A Forest, which discusses how rainforest is being destroyed and animals are losing their homes and natural habitat. Student and myself (to set example) will get a reusable water bottle/mug and a recycle symbol sticker as their first step in reducing their carbon footprint. Chalkboard calendar reduces amount of paper wasted on ripping and throwing away paper calendars (example wipe and reuse).
