My Students
Our school was severely damaged by Hurricane Harvey, so now we are housed at our local high school. Even the before the hurricane, our students had faced many adversities because of their low socioeconomic status. Many of my students families had a difficult time meeting their daily basic needs. Despite my students' obstacles, they are great kids and still strive to be successful. Their efforts are many times thwarted because we don't have a variety of instructional materials available to us. Even with the lack of basic supplies, we still strive to be the best. Hurricane Harvey hit us but it didn't kill us.
My Project
We need basic supplies like post-it notes in the classroom in order to complete daily assignments. We also need technology like laptops and tablets because our foundation in math is below standard and we need the technology for math applications to accelerate basic skills in mathematics. It is very challenging to instruct children and expect them to give their best efforts when they do not have the basic necessities needed to complete daily assignments. I want to make learning fun and exciting for all of my students, however it is discouraging when they feel that no one cares about their education and making sure they have what they need to learn.
