Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 7th grade math students are from South Gate, California. My students' families are mostly working class and immigrant Latin Americans. My students are driven to excel in math and computer science despite of the limited resources at home and school can provide.
My students follow career-themed Pathways, choosing among fields such as Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID).
This is our third year to offer these programs to a larger group of students who signed up and willing to learn robotics and coding. Computer science class is now part of the curriculum as our students' elective class. Students are getting more exposure in debugging codes and creating their own websites. Our students and parents got excited in this program because our school partnered with East Los Angeles College so students will have an opportunity to enroll in college credit courses.
My Project
This project will help me close the achievement gap of my students due to school closure because of pandemic.
The use of the tablet will help and provide my students to see and interact mathematical concepts better.
My students can explore and make discoveries with the different digital platforms like DESMOS that we will use in class.
Many students missed all formal education, in-person or virtual since March 2020. This includes students with disabilities, English learners, students in foster care, migrants and homeless children. Many students lack the devices and Wi-Fi access to fully participate in virtual instruction.
I will use the tablet in creating and designing math and SEL lessons to support my students' learning needs and bridge the achievement gap due to school closures.
As a math teacher, I will be able to enhance classroom instruction using different digital platforms available in our school district with the help of the tablet I am requesting.
