My Students

How frustrating would it be if you could not show the world how much you knew because of a disability? That's how life is for Miguel.

Miguel is a freshman in an inclusion program at one of New York City's most competitive high schools located in East Harlem.

He is fully included in the general education population with paraprofessional and SETSS support services, and he is one of my brightest students. If you read him a chapter from Science or Social Studies book or an act from Shakespeare, he can answer almost any question you throw at him. His auditory comprehension abilities are far above those of most of his peers. When it comes to reading and writing, however, his abilities are limited. Miguel has dyslexia which makes it incredibly hard to comprehend and produce written material. We have been able to get a lot of his books on audio and a paraprofessional in the room helps to read him his tests and quizzes, but note-taking has become an almost insurmountable obstacle.

My Project

Miguel will frequently say, "I'm focusing so hard on writing down the notes that I miss what is going on in class." Even copying notes directly from the board takes him significantly more time than his peers. We are hoping an audio recorder (with compatible storage device) will help Miguel to focus on the class material instead of agonizing over his notes. Additionally, it will help him to study class material for tests and quizzes.

Our goal as society should be to provide all children the opportunity to learn to their fullest potential.

Miguel learns differently from most of his peers, but that does not mean he should not have the opportunity to learn everything they can.
