My students need 56 recorders to make reading music more concrete and accessible.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are bogged down in test after test in the regular classroom. Playing the recorder and reading music gives them additional brain power and also a "brain break" from the usual mental tasks.
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and live in a rough neighborhood.
They also get a lot of pressure to perform academically from administrators, state and federal mandates. They really look forward to a brief escape from all that to be themselves in a musical way. They love to sing and play musical games. But they do not enjoy reading music as much as they would with a real instrument in their hands.
My Project
I plan to teach the students to read music using the recorder. The individual notes would become songs that they either read or create themselves. The students would then perform on the recorders for each other, their teachers, their peers and also their parents at seasonal concerts in winter and spring. That would create lifetime memories of personal achievement and group cooperation.
The recorders would allow the students to blossom by making beautiful music alone and with each other.
They would experience firsthand the reward of applause for their efforts to learn and hours of practice. Thank you to anyone and everyone, including Disney and Chevron, who would support students such as these.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
