Recorders For Young Musicians!

My students need 60 soprano recorders for use in general music class.

My Students

Think back to the joy you may have been fortunate enough to experience if you ever played the recorder as a child. When children play the recorder in a musical ensemble they perform, improvise, and have fun! It is a transforming experience for children! We need 60 recorders for student use.

I teach general music to students in public elementary schools in preschool to grade 8 at 2 schools in urban Illinois.

The students are enthusiastic about learning music, as there is a focus on movement, singing, and classroom instruments in the primary grades. In the upper grades students learn about the elements of music through classroom instruments such as keyboards, ukulele, or guitar, depending on which instruments are owned by the school. Students at the school where these instruments will be primarily used are predominantly Hispanic, with many students speaking both English and Spanish.

My Project

The recorders will be used by all students in grades 4 and 5 general music. Students will be taught using Denise Gagne's "Recorder Resource Kit" and Chris Ludah- Lauder's "Recorder Games", both of which I already own. By using these resources, students will develop skills in recorder performance, note reading, articulation, and improvisation. Through these activities, students will work in small and large groups to develop performance and improvisation skills while having fun!

Although I do own recorder teaching materials, this project will only become a reality if my music students are able to obtain recorders.

The $100 I receive from my school district for instructional supplies does not begin to cover the fees that my 600 music students face. Thank you for your consideration!
