Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work with students from Washington Heights, New York. The same as in the musical, "In The Heights", that Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music and lyrics for, and was just released as a feature film in 2021. A large percentage of our students live in shelters and call our school their home. There is very little opportunity for creative freedom when families are just trying to survive from day to day. Our families try very hard for so little, a lifestyle I hope you are not familiar with. When they come to school they are pumped to learn and I do whatever I can to support their learning.
My Project
Part of launching our NEW music program at our school this fall includes each third-grade student being given their own personal recorder so that they can practice at home in addition to lessons at school.
This package includes both the recorder and book.
Especially with COVID and for health reasons, students will be provided with their own instrument that they can keep and hopefully continue playing even after the school year is over.
Therefore, we will need to renew our request for funding each year so that future third grade students can benefit from this program in years to come!
