My students need recorders to experience playing on a wind instrument that is accessible. The size and range tenor recorder will allow me to more effectively model for my students.

My Students
Located in the South Bronx, our school is a haven for boys growing up in the surrounding low-income neighborhoods. According to the New York State Education Department(NYSED), most of our boys are economically disadvantaged, and are eligible for free school lunch.
My students are creative, enthusiastic and eager to learn.
They love to dance, sing, and play any instrument they can get their hands on. The Music class is a very strong outlet for our boys, particularly our boys with special needs, which make up a fifth of our population.
Boys today face a narrative that automatically labels them as unruly, undisciplined, and emotionally unstable. Our boys of color in particular, which make up 98% of the school, usually face this tenfold throughout their daily lives. Music class is a space where they get to create a counter-narrative by practicing self-control, empathy, and cooperation.
My Project
While having musical play experiences is essential, our students have not experienced playing an instrument that is not percussion. This is a missed opportunity for our students with asthma, for practicing recorder is a great opportunity to control breath, increase lung capacity and reduce panic or anxiety in respiration.
Recorders are a token experience that every child has/should have in the General Music classroom.
In practicing the recorder, the child practices self-control in their breath, their fingers and their posture. The child also experiences carrying out their music literacy skills to a musical medium other than their voice, which prepares my students for instrumental ensembles like band, and orchestra. I am requesting 90 Yamaha YRS-24B recorders because this recorder is in tune enough for students to sound great together in an ensemble. I am also requesting a Tenor recorder because having a recorder an octave below will allow me to model while the class is playing.
