Every time I walk into a classroom, I know that the students are depending on me to give them an experience that will feed their soul! Playing music together does that - and when they learn to play the recorder, they learn how to read music as well.
My students are a diverse group of learners living in the heart of Los Angeles.
The ethnic and economic demography is mixed, making it a true reflection of the city. They are so excited about learning and eager for authentic, hands on instruction. My school is a one of many in Los Angeles that has little funding for the arts.
My Project
My students will use the recorders to learn how to read music and experience the sense of self accomplishment by playing music together for others. They will show what they know by performing songs in a community building concert for the school. They will learn about technique, how to produce a good sound, how to read notes on a treble staff, how to improvise music and how to play in harmony.
By giving students instruments and the opportunity to learn how to read music, I will be planting a seed to help develop future composers, musicians, arrangers or recording artists.
But more importantly, I will give them the opportunity to unite with their classmates and have a hands on experience that will bring joy to themselves and others in the community.
