This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember playing Hot Cross Buns on those awesome plastic recorders? The first couple of times you played it your parents wanted to throw it out a window, but with practice and patience your Hot Cross Buns was ready for Carnegie Hall in NYC! I'm ready to get my kids to Carnegie Hall status.
My students are super enthusiastic about music.
They are giant sponges that just want to learn as much as they can! They get very excited about new opportunities and they look forward to becoming a master at that opportunity. My students might not have all of the financial opportunities that other children have, but that is why classes like music are so important to them. Their music is something that they own and can share with others and doesn't need money attached to it. My school always looks to foster and nurture and path our students want to take and give them as many possibilities as they can handle. We take pride in their excellence and do what we can to make sure that the achieve.
My Project
Right now I only have enough recorders to cover one class of students. Therefore, at the end of class we have to take instructional time to clean and disinfect the recorders so that they can be ready for the next class of students. This is valuable learning and practice time that they are missing out on. These materials are enough recorders for each of 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students to have a recorder specifically assigned to them while they are at my school so that when it is recorder time, all they have to do is get their recorder with their name on it and then put it back when they are done. Then when my 5th graders graduate I will clean and disinfect all of those recorders and then assign them to the rising 3rd graders. These recorders will stay in the classroom so we always know that no matter who walks in the door they will have the materials they need to be successful!
This donation of recorders will really help my students take more ownership of their recorder instruction.
For them to know that every time we play recorder they will have their own specific one to play will help them to take more pride in what they are learning and what they can share with others. It will also show parents that this could be something that they should invest in for their own child.
