Reconstructing A Literacy Rich Classroom After Hurricane Matthew!

My Students
Research shows that early literacy experiences and literacy rich environments are the most effective way to develop pre-reading and cognitive skills to ensure children are successful once they enter school. When students enter school behind, it’s very difficult for them to catch up.
My Kindergarten students are economically-disadvantaged young children who lack early literacy experiences when entering school.
However, they are eager to learn and have the ability to overcome this challenge. As a Kindergarten teacher, I am trying to close the socioeconomic status achievement gap between students. I believe all children learn differently but all children are able to learn.
My Project
Your generous donation will provide instructional materials to develop a literacy rich environment which will enhance students’ early reading skills and support those students who are struggling.
These hands-on activities and leveled books will replace the instructional materials that were soaked and damaged in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.
The leveled books will be utilized during guided reading groups while other students will be using the hands-on activities during center time. This will allow me the opportunity to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students.
Providing effective literacy instruction will improve students’ reading ability. If I’m able to help my students become readers, then they will be successful in school which will open many doors for them in life.
