Reconnections: Art, Science, and Mental Health

Help me give my students canvas, paint and brushes to reconnect with our school, classroom, and each other using art and scientific content as a means to shore up their fragile emotional health.

My Students

For 18 of the last 20 years, my students have earned 50% of all of the positions in the regional science fair in our area of the state. In 2019, we earned a whopping 72% of all of the awards. Students have then gone on to compete and win at the state level, and 15 have advanced to international competition. Due to the pandemic, these competitions have not been possible since spring 2019. These accolades are tremendous, 100% of my students are underrepresented minority students who live below the poverty line and are often counted out by those who don't see their promise. The lack of these opportunities have created a void that needs to be refilled and connections that need to be recreated.

Many students have been adversely affected by the pandemic; the loss of loved ones, the loss of income, and the loss of the safe place that school provides for their emotional and social health.

In 2021, we incorporated a hybrid model with 1 teacher and several students learning face to face and simultaneous virtual instruction. I want to provide a chance for scholars to create scientifically based art projects that can be viewed online and in our school.

My Project

Research suggests that an integration of Art and Science is associated with major academic gains, a more positive school climate, and an increase in emotional well being confidence. The requested supplies will allow students to create both realistic and abstract paintings that will allow higher level students to make critical connections to higher level concepts and allow lower-level students to bridge the gap between vocabulary and reading by focusing on visual connections to content.

Renewal and emotional growth can be enabled when students are allowed to create visual artistic connections to complex content while also allowing social connections to develop between scholars, school, and community observers .

Creativity leads to innovation and innovation leads to science mastery. Students will be able to illustrate relationships between content areas and topics They will be able to use their art to communicate scientific phenomena, as well as create, describe, and refine representations of scientific problems qualitatively. All the while helping to reestablish this social and emotional safety net that is their school and their classroom
