Reconnecting: After the Flood Technology in the Classroom

My Students

I have the lucky lot in life to teach middle-schoolers. Not children anymore, but nowhere near adulthood, my seventh-graders are a challenge, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Seventh-graders have the maturity to tackle abstract thinking, but are still open to considering all angles of a situation. This is the age where teachers actually get to see the light bulbs light up between our students' ears!

Success in a middle school classroom is supported through a variety of materials and platforms.

By providing students with choices in reading materials, technological pathways, and information access, my seventh-graders find their own unique ways to develop as readers in my classroom. A middle schooler who has developed as a reader will most likely become a well-read, well-informed adult contributing to the community of our future.

My Project

Two weeks ago, our school became temporarily a part of the Amite River in Denham Springs, Louisiana. During those three days of flooding, almost everything of value in my classroom was destroyed by water and moisture. Although access to technology in the classroom has made slow, but steady, gains over the last several years, the flood has put us back tremendously in this regard. By funding this project, I will have workstations through which students can interact with Reading programs, conduct online research, and compose/create through a variety of software.

In an area in which 90% of homes were affected by flooding, our abilities to reach out beyond the borders of our school, our community, our disaster are vitally important to recovery.

The computers provide an important link within the classroom to allow dynamic interaction with a variety of media. At a time when many of our traditional resources are scarce, access to virtual libraries, informational databases, and presentation possibilities will provide the necessary components of a fully functional English Language Arts classroom.
