My Students

I work at an alternative school.

Our staff is like a family and our students slowly become a part of that family as relationships are built throughout the year. Our students often live unstable, volatile lives at home. Many of our students face homelessness and a lack of basic structure in their lives. Our school is very small and the staff very dedicated to providing students with a structured, safe, and loving environment in which they can experience the calmness they need to finally focus on learning. Our students are not "bad" kids as they are so often labeled in society. They are bright, loving, talented young people who simply have never been in an environment that fosters success and understanding. In the environment provided at my school every one of these students flourish, grow, and learn that they can succeed!

My Project

My students will focus on technological and digital learning in my classroom. On each day there will be a group using these tools for different projects. One group will use the anti-static straps while building a computer from scratch and parts donated by a local office. Another group of students will practice their coding skills on the recon rover. They will couple this with a free Google CSFirst program that his been teaching them how to write computer code. Another group will use the drone to map out vectors, flight paths, and to see the practical use of degrees stemming from a 360 degree flip!

These are students who, contrary to popular belief, do not all have cell phones and computers at home despite the lack of food on the table.

Most of my students are far from familiar with technology and computers. Coding is a tough skill to acquire and the use of the Recon Rover will make jobs my students never would of dreamed of having before seem possible to them. The computers my students will build will show them viable, cheap options to purchasing a $1,000 computer that they can't afford.
