My students need rechargeable batteries and battery chargers to power our listening center, buzzers, and other battery-operated devices in our classroom.
Technology is a wonderful enhancement to any classroom...until it doesn't work. My students come to me frustrated and say, "The batteries are dead in the wireless headsets," or "My buzzer doesn't work and I am not getting a turn to answer questions".
My second grade students are more engaged and more enthusiastic when they get opportunities to utilize technology in the learning process.
Our wireless listening center with headsets (a previous DonorsChoose, org project) has been such a blessing because my students can hear fluent reading models without the static and short circuiting that we faced in the past. We also have interactive buzzers that we use to "buzz in" with correct answers that excite my students. However, the enthusiasm and engagement are hindered when the batteries go dead and my students have to wait until we can get more batteries.
My Project
By having rechargeable batteries and chargers in our classroom, we can ensure we always have batteries charged and ready to exchange with far less learning time lost because we do not have to wait for a trip to the store to buy more. I also like that having rechargeable batteries for use in our classroom would be setting a good example of reducing waste and therefore, helping the environment. Instead of disposing of the single-use batteries, we would be able to simply put the batteries in a charging station and refresh their power supply!
This project is so simple, and yet the impact will be compounded every time we do not have to dispose of single-use batteries and we do not have to wait for more batteries to be purchased.
