Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love all the learning resources that we have in our classroom. Many of them require batteries to work. As you know, after extended use, batteries do run out. We need rechargeable batteries so that we can easily replace them and practice recycling in the process!

I teach 20 eager students in a self contained full day kindergarten program in a high-need community.

For the majority of my class, English is a second language. In order to enhance lessons and create well rounded learning experiences, I incorporate learning centers into our daily routine. Many of these centers include Tag Reading systems, Leapfrog learning tools, and many other battery operated learning gadgets.

My Project

Our learning centers need to be recharged! I am always looking for ways to enhance learning for my students and I have found that many learning tools that work well are battery operated. Many of the newest learning tools are wonderful especially for my english language learners. My students are able to listen to stories, play games and practice comprehension skills all while increasing their vocabulary. But, the learning suddenly comes to a halt when the battery runs out! We are constantly reminded of the importance of recycling. We as teachers are expected to be role models for our youth. Rechargeable batteries are a great example of good recycling! By introducing my young learners to recycling in Kindergarten, I hope to encourage my students to recycle in their homes and daily life as well.

I am always looking for new and exciting ways to increase learning in my classroom.

Many battery operated reading systems, such as Leapfrog learning systems, have been known to help children improve their reading skills and become more excited about reading; that’s why I encourage my students to use them during center time. By supporting my project, you will be "recharging" my equipment so that my students can continue to learn and help save the planet in the process!
