Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach mathematics in a high needs high school - over 90% of students should qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world. We are one of the last large high schools (over 4000 students) in NYC, and as a teacher I've always got to be on my guard to keep students engaged. It's not enough that I prepare them to pass the state tests, but I need to give them a solid foundation for when they move on to college. One aspect of this foundation is to keep them familiar with technology. I make heavy use of handheld graphing technology in my lessons. We're using either the TI-Nspire or the TI-84+ almost every day in class. Each handheld calculator uses four AAA batteries. With 32 handhelds, and an average life of 2-3 months per set of batteries, I'm running through about 400 batteries per year. When I replace them the discarded cells go into the trash, and on to a landfill or incinerator. I would much rather use rechargeable batteries. Tossing batteries into the trash runs counter to the message of social responsibility I try to instill in my students. Currently available NiMH cell technology has a life cycle of about 1000 equivalent alkaline cells. Switching to rechargeables will keep approximately 120,000 alkaline cells out of the trash. How better to set an example for my students? My proposal is for enough rechargeable cells to power my classroom set of handheld calculators, with a few extra sets so I can always have 4 or 8 cells fully charged in preparation. I am also asking for two chargers, which each can top off 8 cells (enough for two calculators) overnight. As each calculator's batteries wear out, I'll cycle in the rechargeables. With each additional handheld operating on NiMH power, we'll be significantly reducing our environmental impact. I want to be able to reach all students. Employing a technology-rich curriculum has been helping me accomplish that. But I need to employ technology in an environmentally responsible way. My overall objective is to help all my students meet and exceed state standards, and to prepare them for college. Your generous contribution will help keep the students attentive, and consequently will help me achieve my objectives. Thank you very much for considering this proposal.
