My Students

Everyone loves recess! But imagine if your play is limited due to the lack of equipment. For many of my students, the school's playground is the only area in which they can play in, because their homes may have little or limited space for outdoor play. Unfortunately, we do not get gym in kindergarten at my school, so we are always trying to find fun ways to get in 60 minutes of daily physical activity. I just completed my 7th year as a kindergarten teacher at my school. I teach approximately 28 kindergarten students in a general education classroom at a low-income school. My students would love more gym equipment on our playground to keep my students occupied and help them stay physical.

My Project

My class does not get gym, so recess is the only opportunity for our class to run around and get physical activity. We try to go out twice a day to get in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Currently, our playground is shared between two other classes. We have a jungle gym and a slide, but sometimes that is just not enough. We had a basketball hoop a few years back, but unfortunately, it was stolen from the playground one evening. The additional equipment would give students more options during recess. Students would no longer have to "fight" over equipment because there would be more choices. There will also be equipment to plan organized games like an obstacle course and hula hoop contests. This will aid in teaching how to work in a team and sportsmanship. These skills are vital for kindergartners to learn early which is why I'm requesting a portable basketball hoop and mini basketballs.
