Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Everyone loves recess! But imagine if your play is limited due to the lack of equipment. For many of my students, the school's playground is the only area which they can play in, because their homes may have little or limited space for outdoor play. Unfortunately we do not get gym in kindergarten at my school, so we are always trying to find fun ways to get in 60 minutes of daily physical activity. I just completed my 5th year as a kindergarten teacher at my school. I teach approximately 26 kindergarten students in a general education classroom at a low-income school. My students would love more gym equipment our playground to keep my students occupied and help them stay physical.
My Project
My class does not get gym, so recess is the only opportunity for our class to run around and get physical activity. We try to go out twice a day to get in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. Currently, our playground is shared between 2 other classes. We have a jungle gym and a slide, but sometimes that is just not enough. My students are always asking to play soccer and basketball, but we just don't have the equipment available. We came up with a recess wish list to help make the most of our 60 minutes of physical activity on our playground. My students need a basketball hoop, different types of balls, scooter boards, cones, various balance builders and hand/eye coordination activities to make recess more fun! The various recess equipment would allow students to play at different stations around the playground. Students could strengthen their balance, hand eye coordination, and communication skills while using the new equipment. Having more equipment will aid in making recess more than just running around, they will have actual equipment to play games. The additional equipment would give students more options during recess. Students would no longer have to "fight" over equipment because there would be more choices. There will also be equipment to plan organized games like obstacle course and hula hoop contests. This will aid in teaching how to work in a team and sportsmanship. These skills are vital for kindergartners to learn early.
