This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach kindergarten in a very low income neighborhood in Florida. I am new to the school and was shocked to discover the sorry state of recess for these children. What we have is a giant sandbox with a few small climbers. The children are not interested in the climbers (they are very small) and they spend their time digging in the dirty sand (which is never replaced). They dig with broken plastic spoons, cups, and other assorted items that they find in the sand. Adjacent to this giant, fenced in sandbox, is a HUGE basketball court. The children love to run and play on the basketball court, but they have no balls to play with. I am asking for a full Active Play Kit which includes playground balls, jumpropes, color cones, game hoops and bean bags. I am also asking for a large wheeled cart to hold them all in! You have no idea how much your donation would mean to my kindergarteners. They go out to recess full of boundless energy and joy. This kit would allow me to create exciting games and obstacle courses. Active Play is so important for a child's gross motor development, as well providing a much needed break from classroom academics. These children need and deserve exercise that fosters team playing and cooperation. They need challenges to help them grow and develop confidence. Right now they think of recess as boring and they are right- is it completely unstimulating. Please help me turn recess into what it should be: fun, challenging, exciting, and great exercise for the body and the mind.
