My Students
Under construction and over educated! That's what we are facing this year. While the new school is being built our school site(our school is all portables) we are really lacking in space and equipment for both recess and PE. Our yard is a huge black-top surrounded by a chain linked fence.
My school is in an urban setting in California and is a public institution which means there is no budget for supplies.
Many of my fifth grade students are low income and are unable to purchase or donate needed supplies. Our demographics are very mixed with African American, Filipino, Indian, Cambodian, El Salvadorian and Caucasian students to name a few. They are energetic, spirited and hard working. They love and excel at basketball and volleyball and this offers many future opportunities for them that they would not ordinarily have.
My Project
I am requesting basketballs and volleyballs for my students to use at recess and during PE. During recess, there is not a lot to do as our school is under construction. We have basketball hoops and a volleyball net, but need the equipment to play the games. Ultimately, these balls will help students ensure a brighter future. Studies have shown that students who participate in sports perform much better academically. Practicing basketball and volleyball skills will also give them the opportunity to be eligible to play on a high school team and/or earn college scholarships. Learning a sport also teaches character traits, helps students develop at working together as a team, and how to be leaders and good communicators.
Your donations will make a huge difference in the lives of my students by supporting them in athletics.
Your support means that my students will have opportunities to shine outside of academic time, and will develop skills that could get them onto a high school sports team and potentially earn them scholarships for college. This provides for a bigger and brighter future. It all starts with a ball.
