Recess Is Time For Free Play

My students need basketballs, soccer balls with a goal, footballs, jump ropes, and scooters for recess .

My Students

Our kindergarten students are the youngest on our campus in central Florida. They love learning. Most come from homes with single parents, a grandparent, or other family members are raising them. The saddest situations are where the students are in a homeless situation.

We are a Title I school.

We have about 89 percent of our students that receive free or reduced rate lunch. Recess is a part of our day mandated by the district and as a teacher, it is a great part of our day. The children look forward to free and active play on the kindergarten playground. I look forward to watching them having fun and playing. Young children need this time of day to reset and not think about math or reading. They develop social skills and learn cooperation when they are playing together.

My Project

My students get 20 minutes of recess a day. Our current playground equipment is slowly falling apart and breaking with constant use and this is a good thing! We need basketballs, footballs, volleyballs, and soccer balls. The children are learning about soccer. They have asked for a soccer goal to practice their aim. This would also be safer than kicking into the fence. Basketball has always been a favorite and we have the hoops but the balls won't hold air any longer.

Our PE coach has taught our children to jump rope.

This is the first year our children have been crazy over jump roping. We need more ropes so more children can show off their new found skills. The teachers also borrowed a 16 foot rope so we can turn the rope and the children take turns jumping. We need our own rope to keep in the kindergarten equipment.

The children love using the scooters in PE class. They would like to use scooters in recess. Scooters would provide another activity to encourage active play during recess.
