Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Electronics have a way of disappearing in my school. The students suffer because the limited number of calculators that are available to them are kept behind lock and key and are extremely difficult to access and must be shared by all teachers.
My students are all recent immigrants from South and Central America.
Each has been in the United States for no more than two or three years. For many, enrollment at our school is their first experience at formal education. My students are amazing. Each is learning English in addition to all their other high school subjects. I often tell them how impressed I am with their hard work.
My Project
I am specifically requesting inexpensive calculators that I can keep in my classroom. The calculators will be secured by me every night in a locker in my classroom. This arrangement will allow me to make calculators available to my students every day. Right now, this is not possible given the resources of our school. Many of my students come to my classroom on Friday mornings before school begins to get extra help. They have dreams of attending college and I want to help them succeed. Having these calculators would be extremely helpful to that end.
With your donation, my students will have the opportunity to use calculators in class everyday.
Calculator skills are an important part of the NYS Regents curriculum, especially in algebra, and your donation will allow my students to practice these skills on a regular basis.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
