Was it difficult for you to express your thoughts through writing and/or speaking when you were in school? My students are having this difficulty and they need another outlet.
Hurricane Sandy devastated our school and community with a terrible storm surge and high winds.
My students witnessed the devastation first-hand as all of their belongings were washed away. We recently returned to our school after a two month stay at a host sight. We did as much as we could there with very limited supplies and materials. Now we are trying desperately to catch these kids up on much needed instruction on how to think critically and creatively.
My Project
We are requesting a classroom set of Build to Express Legos from Lego Education. These Legos will engage my students in activities that they have struggled with in the past. Using these specialized kits, they can create scenarios or answer higher-order thinking questions that pertain to the many topics we cover in third grade. They will have to think critically and explain their thinking using the Lego pieces that they know and love.
So many students have trouble expressing their thoughts.
This specialized set of Legos will empower them and raise their self-esteem. The Build to Express Legos will aide immensely in closing the critical thinking gap that Hurricane Sandy created.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
