Rebuilding My Briarwood First Grade Room After the Tornado

My students need a cordless listening center, tables and dry erase boards to start school in our alternate location.

My Students

Can you imagine your entire school being destroyed in a tornado while you are inside? My brave first graders did that and need a well furnished, fun, and friendly classroom to come back to.

My students are strong, smart, bright little learners who love school and face the challenges of having lost their school, homes, belongings, pets and in some cases parents or siblings after the May 20th tornado ripped through our community in Oklahoma.

These are regular every day kids living in very irregular circumstances and need structure, routine and stability added back to their lives. School is the place that can happen with the generosity of others.

My Project

We will be in a much smaller classroom than we are used to this school year. Being able to move around the room effectively and using space efficiently is very important. These students face many challenges right now and a well functioning classroom does not need to be one of them. Smaller tables and portable lap boards will allow us to take advantage of each inch of space and be able to move around the room for learning and activities. The tables allow students to have another work space besides their desks where they can take center activities and individual white boards will allow us to move to the floor to do phonics and math lessons rather than be confined to a desk all day.

This year is going to be difficult for my students on many levels.

My goal is to provide a space where these kids feel safe and are inspired to learn. I want to create a space that is cheerful, allows social interaction and movement which is vital to young students and their productivity. I want their first grade year to be fun and happy as they heal from the damage this tornado has done to their lives. Your donation will help my students have the wonderful year they deserve.
