My Students
Students at our North Carolina public elementary school come from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The majority of our students, receive free or reduced–price lunch. Their varying backgrounds means students come to our school with varying levels of prior knowledge and skills – knowledge and skills that serve as the foundation of academic achievements.
Because many of our students come from homes with limited resources, we diligently work to meet the needs of the “whole child”; academics, social, food, clothing etc.
My Project
Kindergarten is a year of amazing growth for our young learners. One of the vital skills that we teach our enthusiastic students is reading. It is so important that a young student develops healthy reading habits and understands the importance of comprehending what they are reading. One of the steps in improving a child's reading accuracy and comprehension is ensuring the child is reading a book that is developmentally appropriate for them.
Leveled readers are available in my classroom for reading lessons with me, but I do not have enough leveled books available for every child to take one home.
The leveled readers I would like to purchase will become take home "bag books" - since kindergartners start reading at different levels and grow at different rates, the variety of leveled readers will allow me to send home a book on that child's reading level.
More than half of students from low‑income households
