My students need books such as the "Hunger Games" trilogy, "Devil in a Blue Dress", and "Tears of a Tiger" to improve literacy and to encourage daily reading.

My Students
"Is this all we have?" The students have a desire to read; however, the books available are so far out of date that students don't read as much as they could. Maya Angelou said: "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good."
I work with high school students who have different interests and range in age from 14-18 years.
Most of my students are very strong-minded individuals and enjoy debating on different topics. The school I work in is in a rural setting, with most of the families of the students being low to middle income. Currently our percentage of free or reduced lunch stands near 90%. One of the standing initiatives at our school is improving student reading ability. As it stands, our students are largely two or more grade levels below their required reading levels. An initiative to offer them a greater variety of books and chances to read would be optimal.
My Project
The books requested will be used in several different ways. The sets will be used in the classrooms across the board including the Exceptional needs classes; moreover, they will be made available for students who are members of the Book Club. Beyond those goals, the individual books will be available for any and all students who would like to check the book out through the media center services. This will allow students to have more variety of books to choose from and to read some of the books they have been looking for yet they were not available in the school's library.
Having more books available, of different genres, will peak their interest and increase their desire to read.
This will also give students a chance to expand their vocabulary and improve their literacy. This donation will also show the students that people not only care about our school, they care about the progress that the students can make. Students often feel that their work is in vain because they don't think that they have support. This donation will work against that idea.
