This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our 8th grade students are bright and inquisitive learners. They are excited to come to school every day and they put their whole hearts into every learning opportunity they take on. Our students love interactive projects and activities that engage all of their learning styles. Our school is a Title 1 school that receives funding from different sources within the state and federal government. The funds sometimes don't cover all of the classroom needs to ensure that our students are successful.
Despite having the odds stacked against us sometimes, our students love to learn.
In addition to their love of learning, they can't get enough good books to read. Help me continue their hunger for reading by putting amazing books in their hands.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of the novel, Whirligig, for my students to read. During their 8th grade year, we focus our genre studies on realistic fiction. A novel that the students find interesting and that they can connect to is key in deepening their understanding of the genre. In the second half of the year, we read The Outsiders, a classic realistic fiction novel with themes that have stood the test of time, and lessons for my students to learn from.
I am in need of a novel with universal themes and believable characters that my students that will draw my students in and that they will find interesting.
Whirligig is about a boy that is working his way through a tragedy by honoring a parent's wishes to create tributes to a classmate by building whirligigs in the 4 corners of the United States. This journey teaches the main character about himself, and his journey can teach my students about their own selves.
