My Students
"It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." My students are choosing to read, but I we are always looking to push ourselves as readers and writers in our middle school English class.
My students are exposed and immersed to a lot of "classic literature" because of our required whole class novels studies, but we really need to also be staying relevant with current event and diverse literature that will enhance our learning in a different way.
I have a very hard working group of students, however some students come to me in seventh and eighth grade, and still haven't found the books that they connect to, and that can truly make them lifelong readers. Continuing to put new and diverse books in their hands is the perfect way to help them to continue to grow.
Many of these students have a desire and the motivation to read books, but the books that could really show them how powerful reading is aren't in our classroom library yet!
My Project
These books will be used to teach every single common core literature and informational standard. These students will be reading, sharing, critically thinking, and pushing themselves as readers. My students read many "classics" because of our curriculum, but I think it is equally as important that they read new, varied, and relevant books so ALL of my students can find book genres, characters, plots, and history that they can connect to.
These realistic fiction books will challenge my readers to share think critically and creatively, their thinking, challenge each other teach and learn from each other, and enrich their vocabulary.
By participating in realistic fiction book clubs, all my students will be exposed to the same literature genre, yet it still allow them to challenge themselves as individual readers.
All students will learn to be in a community of readers that truly think about and just love reading. Being exposed to the same genres of great literature is such a vital piece for us to create a whole community of lifelong readers, and these books are just the ticket for building that beautiful reading community.
