My Project

I teach in a Title I school in Atlanta, Georgia, Our student population includes a lot of kids with special educational needs, including students with disabilities and students who speak little to no English. STEM has been part of the school culture since 2013, when we realized STEM education has incredible potential for empowering all of our students. Seeing our students collaborate, think creatively, and engage their curiosity to enrich their education has been hugely rewarding.

As our STEM program grows we continue seeking ways to innovate for our students.

STEAM--adding arts integration to our STEM practices--is, to me, a fantastic way to bring together arts and sciences. Helping students see the art in a creative solution, and the science behind a creative product, fuels their ability to problem solve and make connections. According to a policy brief from the Education Commission for the States, an education integrating STEM and the arts can enhance engagement, creativity, executive functioning, innovation, spatial thinking, and social-emotional well-being. Students benefit from doing and creating--which is where our real-world tools come in.

With access to the requested tools, students will be able to explore new avenues of STEM through artistic engineering. The sewing machines will allow us to learn about garment construction to "upcycle" old clothes, create costumes, and learn basic mending skills. The podcasting equipment will provide an opportunity to amplify student voices as they communicate their ideas to a larger audience and learn about audio engineering while they do. The power drills and tool sets will allow us to go further with constructing solutions and creating products, while learning how to use real tools safely and properly. These tools will provide real-world experiences for students that can open doors for them in the future.
