Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My project is to support my Alternate Curriculum high school students in strengthening their real world money skills. This is part of our curriculum, and my students really enjoy engaging with high quality money math materials. They have an understanding of and motivation related to money and money math. We are able to use this “real world math” to teach and reinforce the varying levels of mathematical concepts they are learning (number recognition, more/less, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, fractions).

Help make learning these all important real life skills engaging and reinforcing for our diverse group of students.

We are a Title I school. My students have moderate to extensive support needs, with intellectual disabilities, autism, and/or multiple disabilities. The students work on money skills ranging from coin counting and recognition, to using a calculator, the “dollar up method,” identifying the best currency to pay with, to calculating totals, change, price differences, tax, tip, and discounts. We also emphasize financial literacy skills and concepts such as looking for the best value, checking how much money is needed before making a purchase, and tax, tipping, budgeting, interest, credit cards and saving. Our program uses community based learning activities to reinforce our students practicing these skills in the real world, which brings additional engagement and motivation.

I am inspired to find high quality and motivating materials to stimulate my student’s interest in building this important life skill. I have used the menu math books and find them engaging and straightforward for students, and to cover a great range of money skills. I have found money math games to be uniquely motivating and fun for the students. It is a subject they enjoy and are knowledgeable about, and an activity that allows them to be social in a comfortable, small group setting.
