Do you remember what it was like to read word problems about activities or places that you have never even heard of? My students face this issue everyday because of the outdated word problems in our Math book. Often it is hard for them to even realize that Math can be used in their everyday lives!
I currently have 19 students in my classroom that come from a variety of backgrounds.
We go to a public school. Our class is made up of ten boys and nine girls. These students are extremely hard working and want to be successful. They participate in a variety of activities outside of school including sports, dance, theater, orchestra, piano, and many more! This is a fun loving class that always helps a classmate in need. This class is big on celebrating the successes of the other students and picking each other up when someone is down.
My Project
This Math Problem Solving kit will give my class, and future classes, the opportunity to look at real world problems instead of random ones created from the book. These problems and manipulatives will allow the students to see how Math does relate to "real life." When the word problems are meaningful it is a lot easier to understand the problems. This will also give us all a break from constantly using the Math book!
Please help my students feel more comfortable and confident about solving word problems!
The examples we get from the book are not realistic and often times the students cannot even relate to them. This makes it very difficult to get the students excited about solving word problems.
