My Project
My students struggle with foundational and basic application of math skills. I am a math interventionist for students grade 2-5. I see approximately 150 students throughout the year. Students are struggling with basic math skills and application of these in the real world. My job is to first, create a positive mind-set for math learning and second, fill the gaps in math learning due to COVID-19.
My students are eager and excited to learn math skills and understand how math applies in the real world.
They begin to see how math helps them in everyday life by the activities I engage them in. When my student are able to manipulate base ten blocks to understand regrouping in addition and subtraction, then they understand the skill and why it is necessary. I need to provide my students with a variety of hands-on activities in order for them to manipulate their learning. The games and books that I have carefully chosen will provide practice of these skills in number sense, fractions, money and place value etc.
I am fortunate to be able to service so many students at our school. I am passionate about teaching math to my students, even the reluctant student. I build a safe learning environment and rapport with my students. They trust me and feel safe to make mistakes (M-istakes A-llow T-hinking to H-appen) I use a variety of strategies to engage my students in learning. I teach songs, movements, have visual aides, and of course manipulatives to make learning math and application in real world exciting.
