My students need Real World Math Problem Solving Kits and a Math Quiz Game Show.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Bencic's classroom raised $215
This project is fully funded
Hello to you all! I'm a 4th grade teacher in rural Tennessee. Our school is very small (just 125 students) and located in an underprivileged area; however, our students and teachers take great pride in what we accomplish--we work hard to be the best we can be!
My fourth graders are a fabulous group of kids. They love the workstations that we do daily. Yes, arranging daily workstations requires more work for me, but it seems that the hands-on activities really get my kiddos motivated to learn. It's worth the effort! This is why I believe it makes a difference when educators take the time to plan student-centered, hands-on activities as much as possible. Why? They work!
Here's my problem: I'm willing to do the work to set up math workstations, but the resources are simply not there. I need math resources for my class. Our state has set forth new, more rigorous standards to strive for, beginning this year. Unfortunately, students get caught up in the "procedure" of math, and forget that we learn math to help us in the "real world." Sometimes, they don't realize why/how they completed a math problem--they learn HOW to do the problem, but don't understand WHY. They wonder "...when will I ever use this?" Of course, many of our new standards are related to real world problems. So this is where you can help! I want to bring the "real world" to my workstations.
Our daily workstations are great--they are usually centered around literacy; however, I would love to incorporate math stations in which they could "try out" their new math skills in hands-on group activities. (After I get resources for several math stations, I will use these during our math classes instead.) Also, the "Math Game Show" is a great way to review math concepts and can be used as a group activity and even a reward. Lakeshore's game show games are great classroom resources; the kids love them. (I have the science game show, and my students look forward to playing!)
Please know that both of these resources will be used for years to come; I take care of my resources, because they are so valuable. Also, the materials will enable my students to learn in a less-traditional way. Students seem to thrive when allowed to work together--I want to make this possible for them.
Finally, thank you so very much for considering our project. It is still amazing to me that DonorsChoose has made such a significant difference in my classroom. Thank you for valuing education!
