This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students desperately need role models. We constantly talk about civics and celebrating diversity, but my classroom could really benefit from some real-world examples of outstanding characters through books.
My students are from economically challenged, often broken households in SW Denver.
Our school is made up of a diverse population of kids, many of whom are from immigrant families, and most of which are on the free and reduced lunch program. They love coming to school and love getting new books for our classroom library!
My Project
We work very hard in school to celebrate diversity, but it can be hard when you don't have a lot of materials or books with which to teach diversity! I am requesting 29 picture book biographies of great Americans, from George Washington, to Amelia Earhart, to George Washington Carver, to Jesse Owens, to Barack Obama. This diverse group of biographies celebrates early Americans, a modern President and First Lady, great athletes, adventurers and discoverers, and upstanding citizens throughout American history.
Having real-world role models for my young, impressionable students would be a very powerful force in developing their character and idea of who a hero is.
I want to inspire my students to become heroes in their own families and lives, and let them know that anyone who tries can make a big difference in this world. Please consider donating to this project to help build and inspire the future leaders of our world! Thank you.
