My Students

Encourage, engage, and energize today's students to love math by using hands-on manipulatives and literature. Math concepts become more concrete when we can see it, touch it, and do it. By using these hands-on manipulatives and reading math stories, all students will begin to view math as FUN!

Classrooms come in many shapes and sizes.

My class is a second and third grade combination with students ranging from six to eight years old. We are quite the melting pot with many different ability levels. They are a happy bunch who love to read and use hands-on tools. Most recently we have used fruit to estimate and count the number of seeds in a piece of fruit. Many of the students like to use linker cubes to represent their findings. They would love to have other math tools to use, to help reinforce math concepts. My classroom was relocated over the summer, and many of my math manipulatives have disappeared. The students would love to be able to use different types of tools to help them solve math problems. By showing their work using manipulatives, they are reinforcing major math concepts that they will need now and in the future.

My Project

Math tools are an essential part of breaking down math problems. Students are encouraged to use drawings and manipulatives to problem solve and collaborate with classmates. By having numerous types of manipulatives available, students can share how they solved the problem in different ways. Through daily practice and exposure to many types of manipulatives, the students will use critical thinking skills and teamwork to solve problems. In class, I present real world problems and the students must solve the problems in two or more ways. This fosters collaboration and improves their problem solving skills. The students also love to read math stories to reinforce what they are learning. If we can teach math in nonthreatening ways, students will absorb the material and take ownership of their own learning. Math is everywhere and a strong foundation is essential for every student. The world needs more problem solvers, and this project will inspire students to be the best.

Join our team and support our class today.

When we engage and inspire students, they become successful, ready to enter a career in the future. Students will discover that there are many tools they can use to solve problems. By encouraging collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, our students will be career and college ready when they graduate. Now is the time to invest in their future!
