This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a school where learning is in the form of real life experiences. Our MicroSociety school does just that!

I teach a third grade bilingual class in a low income school district where there is approximately a 40% dropout rate.

Our school is a "Micro-Society" school where our students create a "society" of their own and build connections between the classroom and real life. All of my students are English learners that are excited and engaged in learning everyday. In communities like ours, everyday, the gap of the digital divide is widening. Our students need to prepare for real life experiences and situations. They need the tools that will allow them compete in this fast paced global society.

My Project

My students' micro venture is called Digital Wonders. They take orders from the other ventures to create advertisements, business cards, address labels, print envelopes etc... On "market days" they turn the classroom into a photo studio and take pictures. They print them out and deliver them to all their "customers" in the school. The quality of the printer that we have is not very good. A color laser printer will produce high quality products that the students can be proud of. Their "customers" will buy more products if they like the final goods. In addition to a printer with extra toner, my students will need a listening center for two reasons. The first one is for my English learners can hear reading selections and read along with them. My students also record public service announcements and play them for their customers. This listening center is perfect, especially when multiple activities take place in the classroom. The camera and netbook are for the photography studio.
