Most of my students are getting ready to branch out into the 'real' world, whether it is getting their driver's license for the 10th graders, or graduating for my seniors, they are on the cusp of major changes. As much as I want them to all know my curriculum, it is so much more important to me that I am making good citizens who are respectful, self-motivating and adaptable. To achieve these vital 'soft' skills I have been changing my classroom from a forward-facing, lecture-style class to a comfortable and collaborative environment where students figure things out for themselves or together. I want to be the last stop for the answer so they learn to rely on themselves and their abilities. To achieve this, my classroom needs more collaborative seating to help the students inspire each other.
All our projects this year include giving back to the community, like my seniors who are selling phone wallets and giving their profits to local non-profit organizations!
OR my 10th graders who are creating a museum for the community.
FYI: We live in a small city and everyone in our school qualifies for free breakfast and lunch each day.
My Project
These furniture pieces will help students be more collaborative and prepare them for the office setting many will have in their future careers. The projects my students are working on require them to converse at length to plan their project, make decisions and self-assess.
Traditional single student desks have to go, and collaborative workstations must transition in.
My classroom transition has already begun, but these additional supplies and seats will help. The projects my students are working on will not only help them develop soft skills, but will impact the community as a whole, through donations and open museum nights.
