My Project
This book is funny, powerful, and incredibly real — and my 10th graders connect with it in a way that traditional nonfiction can’t always achieve. Trevor Noah’s story of growing up in apartheid-era South Africa helps students make sense of big topics like racism, inequality, family, language, and identity.
Through this book, students will:
• Analyze an author’s purpose and point of view
• Make inferences using real-world experiences
• Explore how systems of power impact everyday people
• Reflect on how storytelling builds empathy and understanding
Many of my students don’t see themselves in the texts we usually read. Born a Crime gives them something that feels relatable, honest, and inspiring — while building the reading and writing skills they need for life.
