This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students always have a difficult time becoming engaged in reading during the first few months of school. Through various reading time and activities during the year my students usually turn around. I want books that will pull them in early in the school year helping them develop a love for books!

I teach in a low income, inner city school.

Most of my students do not have a collection of books at home to choose from, many of them have parents and caregivers who can not read to them. They struggle at home. However, everyday they come to school and they read, write and do math, they are safe in school. I choose books that I know my students can enjoy and relate to. The best books and discussions come from the books where we can all make a connection. Felita and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe are those types of books! I want to start the school year off with great books and fun discussions and projects!

My Project

The classroom sets of Felita and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe will be used for during literature circles and classroom read aloud. The teacher guide for the book will be used to help come up with various writing lessons for this story as well as cross curricula lessons with social studies. My students will love this book because many of them can relate to this book. I also requested an Ebook and CD for The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe for students who may struggle with the harder text. With the this book we can create many stories and drawings for art projects that relate to the book. This book is an excellent way to open up the imagination of my students and create their own imaginative stories. I know both books will have all my students happily participating in books reports and projects, art lessons, social studies and writing activities that can relate to the stories.

Donations to the projects will help to improve the reading and writing of all of my students, it will help to engage them great literature and classroom discussions.

Most of the time students have a hard time discovering books they like because they don't make any connections to the text; both of these books will provide my students with opportunities to make very real connections to the characters in the story and develop strong interest in reading other similar books.
