This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach third grade at a school where roughly 70% of students speak a primary language other than English. My students are gifted in understanding compassion, differences, and what it means to struggle. When we come together each day from a wide variety of backgrounds it's a unique opportunity to learn from each other and the community around us. Many of them are fighting for a life very different from their current realities.

They're learning that the power to change lies within themselves regardless of circumstances.

As a teacher I am privileged to help them in that process. My instructional focus in math and science pushes me to find the best methods, materials, and supports I can to help them succeed.

My Project

In 3rd grade we have a Living/Non-living unit that I typically LOVE doing. Little did I know, our south facing windows would prove a real kill-joy for classroom aquariums. This year I'm hoping to take our learning to the next level with a Real Live Turtle. Timothy the Russian tortoise has my kids names all over him. My students will use the materials you help purchase to create Timothy's habitat and care for him throughout the year.

This hands-on experience caring for their own reptile will build life skills that give our students a deeper understanding of the world around them and prepare them to be contributing members.

Wish us luck and we dive into classroom pet ownership. We're looking forward to all the adventures to come!
