This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How hard is it to read things that you are NOT interested in? Can you imagine learning to read with materials that are uninteresting and uninspiring?
The most liberating of abilities is to read.
In our class, we are opening doors to the world around us through reading!
Our class is a group of 20 imaginative, engaged kindergarteners (and two teachers) in a co-teaching classroom. The students come from various different levels of exposures and needs. They are energetic, motivated, and inquisitive and in need of materials to continue their excitement in reading!
Our school is comprised of most students from loving yet low-income households. Our parents want the best for their children and we as teachers aim to meet those goals.
My Project
We will be using these non-fiction books and interactive letter software downloads to learn how to read!
Students are able to "book shop" weekly for high-interest books to put in their leveled book boxes. They use these book boxes to supplement our reading instruction as well as for reading and responding activities.
We have been blessed with a set of fiction books for the students to choose from, however we are lacking non-fiction options.
Additionally, I am individualizing for students who are still not ready to read with the interactive letter software - hoping this helps get them invested in learning their letters and sounds so that they can begin to be readers!
With your support, the students will be able to choose high-interest texts that are individualized to each students reading level.
This allows students to be more invested in and excited about reading - an irreplaceable gift!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
