I have a first grade class of eager learners who have an avid interest in animals. Our school is located in the inner city in a very poor neighborhood.
My students have developed an avid interest in our classroom pets and would spend all their free time watching them. I want them to start writing about what they see but their interest flags when it comes to putting words on paper. I want to incorporate digital pictures onto our computer so that the students can use the pictures in their writing. If they have a picture to grab their attention I think they would want to write about what is there. These are extremely poor children who do not have pets at home and have never seen some of the animals we have in our classroom. We could even visit the zoo or science center and take pictures of other animals and then write about them also.
We need a camera and a way to transport the pictures to our computer. With the digital camera and port I think the children will have a great opportunity to see different animals and have pictures on hand to write about the animals that they have seen. Using the pictures as motivation to help develop writers is one of my main goals.
You can help them become motivated writers by giving them the opportunity to capture the things they see in pictures that they can attach to their work and write about. Help make a difference in the lives of these sweet children who really need a caring person to step in and help them develop as writers.
