My Students

"What are we doing today?!" It's a question I hear multiple times a day as each class makes their way into the Art room. It brings a smile to my face as the question is asked joyfully with sincere intent as the students can't wait to get their hands on the next art project! I get to see all kindergarten through 6-grade classes once a week. My students are so creative and not afraid to get their hands messy! I strive to supplement our history-rich curriculum with art projects across as many mediums as possible.

The students are bummed out whenever they miss an Art day, but they always manage to put a smile on and move forward.

Of course, I try to catch them up best I can, but sometimes they've missed the project completely. Not all projects can be replicated at home as that would require purchasing some uncommon art supplies. But we're always optimistic and try our best to bring out the best in any situation. The students are so quick to adapt and find the best solutions for any roadblocks that may be in their path.

My Project

Students today know and excel with technology! They've been brought up in this world of advancement, so why stop at paint and brushes? They have the potential to be brilliant with virtual art. There is so much value to being familiar with, if not proficient, at this new art medium. Not only is it a fun skill, but it is one that will be useful throughout their education and different careers.

These tablets with be utilized in exploring graphic design through free apps so the students can continue their learning when they get home.

Since most have experienced online learning in light of COVID-19, access to a phone or tablet is more likely than not. I would start with the free app, Sketchbook, to connect the student's knowledge of brushes, pens, pencils, etc. to their virtual counterparts. We will explore the use of virtual instruments to create works of art without mess. (Don't worry, we would never replace the "messy" projects, but the tablets would provide relief to some of my students who don't appreciate the mess.)

For example, one of my special needs students has sensory concerns and does not like to get his hands dirty. I know one of his hobbies is writing gaming code and he is very smart with technology. I believe if he could get his hands on a tablet to create art, he would be ecstatic and it would change the way he sees art.

We are surrounded by computer-generated art! But how many students have actually created their own virtual graphic design? My goal is to be able to answer that question with confidence that my students have but that has yet to be the case. These tablets would give me the ability to teach virtual art hands-on!
