My students need phonics games like touch and read games, stacking and building games, and vowel learning games, to support their developing reading skills!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I believe that making learning fun is what gets kids hooked on school from the get go. Every day I try to get my kindergarten students to "play" and simultaneously learn. When my lessons are strategically designed as games, everyone wants to participate and everyone is working hard and having fun!
My school is an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse city school in an older neighborhood.
The students that will benefit from this project are 5 and 6 year olds, for most of whom, this is their first experience with learning in a formal setting. They are so excited to learn about reading, writing, and math! When I can use that budding excitement and create learning momentum with it, perfect environment for successful foundational skills to be mastered is created!
My Project
"In every job that must be done there is an element of fun, you find the fun and... SNAP, the job's a game" -Mary Poppins
Incoming Kindergartners have a big dream; from the get go they are told that "this year they will learn to read!" As a kindergarten teacher, I have a big job to let these eager little learners in on the secrets of reading!
Once we learn all the letter names and the sounds they make, we can begin stringing those sounds together to reveal words! This is the most exciting thing for a 5 year old... they discover that they can decode the mystery of written language and they feel so very proud of themselves in this accomplishment!
These games will allow the kids to practice putting consonant-vowel-consonant words together, learning about vowel pairs, and even the "magic e" or "silent e". Instant learning centers are a great way for students to practice these skills with friends while playing (play is the essential element in teaching young children)! With the Touch and Read match sets, the kids can practice reading CVC words and beginning to sound out new words. As their confidence builds, they can learn complex vowel sounds with learning locks and stack and build flip books. All these games are simple enough that the kids can play independently while I am working with small groups of kids to master these skills!
