My Students

My students are a vibrant, diverse, inquisitive, and resilient group of learners.

They come from many different homes, communities and cultural experiences. Yet, they each have their own aspirations and dreams for the future. My goal as an educator is to facilitate their growth as they transition into middle school, preparing them to be college and career ready for whatever path they choose.

My Project

We begin every language arts class with a writing prompt. These "quick writes" range from "write a summary of the book that you are reading" to "what do you think the quote, 'be the change you wish to see' means?" This allows my students to warm-up their brains and start transferring their thoughts into words on paper. It also provides students with an outlet to validate their opinion, and share their experiences in a safe, and structured way. However, to foster engaging and authentic writing experiences, each lesson needs to be scaffolded by access to writing materials, guidelines and supplies.

This project will support my students by providing access to a variety of materials and supplies, which will foster their ability to "write widely" and engage in diverse writing experiences.

The chart paper will allow me to create anchor charts for our classroom that emphasize our discussions during mini-lessons. The Common Core grammar book, and interactive language arts notebook will allow students to practice grammar skills that are essential to crafting well-prepared essays. The whiteboards, sentence strips and markers will allow students to put these grammar skills to use, and edit passages or sentences. Writing prompt cubes will provide students with choice in their daily "quick writes" and sharing. The short stories allow students to closely read, critique and discuss different writing works with their classmates. This ties the skills they learn in reading classes to their development as writers. Poster boards will allow students to display their writing, especially during our informative writing unit, within the classroom and to our school. Finally, the writing organizer, highlighters, staplers and pens will create a space within the classroom that holds materials to guide students through the writing process.
