My students need rock samples, charts, and a rock cycle model.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third grade students are Ready to ROCK! This year, I'm teaching third grade math and science to 40+ children. Our most recent statistics show that 92.2% of our students are considered 'low-socioeconomic' status. That's important for several reasons. Aside from receiving breakfast and lunch at school, it also means that my students might not have as many opportunities to gain fundamental knowledge as other students. They may have had fewer life experiences and because of that, they have less background knowledge to draw from when they are learning.
We all make connections between things we already know, and things we are learning. My kids might find that more difficult than others. However, it doesn't effect their ability to learn, or their curiosity. It doesn't effect their goals or 'what they want to be when they grow up.' It just means they might have to work harder. And work hard, they do!
My students are some of the most curious children I've ever met. One of our major focuses this year is the rock cycle and different types of rocks. But...we need some ROCKS!
We've found that earth science is really difficult for our students, mostly because it isn't something they've been exposed to. With this project, I can give my kids some classroom experiences with rocks and things they've never seen before. This kind of hands-on learning greatly increases student learning. Have you ever seen the look of wonder on a child's face when they see something new for the very first time? How about that twinkle in their eye that they get when they realize they've just caught on to something? This project can put those looks on my kids' faces. This project can put earth right on the table in front of my kids.
I'm requesting a rock sample set that includes igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks; a rock cycle model and rock cycle charts. We need these things for my students to get an up-close and personal experience with ROCKS!
My kids come from an inner-city background, so though surrounded by concrete and pebbles in the playground, they really haven't had any experiences with rocks. I'm really excited about this project because my KIDS are excited about anything new. They can't WAIT to learn.
Science is one of the areas where my kids really struggle, and for no real reason except for lack of exposure to things in the world beyond where they live.
This project would give my students a chance to experience rocks for themselves. Even in the classroom, it's a great opportunity. This project will give my students the chance to take something they've learned at school and connect it to other areas in their lives. It will target a weak area for them, the earth sciences and will grant them the opportunity to closely observe rocks they've never encountered.
Over the years, working with my babies in the inner-city, I've learned that they're tough, and they don't give up easily. They're ready to learn, willing to learn and excited about learning. All they really need are the same opportunities that other children take for granted. My kids may never go camping or excavating. They may never visit an archaeological dig and they may find, later on in life, that rocks aren't really their 'thing.' My goal isn't to make my students rock hounds, but to make them aware of the world they live in. My goal is to give them experiences and exposure to as many things as possible, and by so doing, grant them CHOICES.
By funding this proposal, you can empower my students by giving them knowledge and understanding. They're only third graders now, but everything we do today, touches tomorrow. Thank you in advance for your support!
