it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As Joseph Addison said, "Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body." My students need your help to exercise their minds.
My students attend a public conversion charter school serving prekindergarten through fifth grade students.
Most students live in the neighborhood surrounding the school, but a few live in other parts of the city. The majority of my students are learning English at school and nearly all students receive free or reduced price meals. Many of my third graders are reading one to two years below grade level.
My Project
My students need additional support to improve their reading. Teaching word cards will help provide visual representations (critical for English-language learners) of confusing homonyms and multiple meaning words. Reading trackers will help students stay focused when reading and not get overwhelmed by all the text on the page. With the book display, I will be able to highlight relevant books for students to read independently, helping students make connections between texts. The leveled nonfiction texts will help students read appropriate, yet challenging information in an accessible format. Finally, the magnetic sentence activity center will help students practice in creating grammatically correct sentences while providing instant feedback.
Using the word cards, reading trackers, book display, leveled nonfiction text, and magnetic sentence activity center will help my students grow and improve as readers, speakers, and writers.
