My Students
My 7th grade middle school students are from urban, rural, and suburban areas. Our students filter into middle school from three schools. We spend some time getting to know each other so we can become a community of learners. I have language arts and social studies classes that have a wide-range of learners. Some students may be in our gifted program, learning support program, or life skills program. However, I find that all students enjoy using technology. Sharing technology and learning from each other helps us bond together as a class.
My Project
Many of my students struggle to read independently. Many students believe that reading is boring and "too hard." This selection of high-interest books like The Crossover and Booked will draw them in and get them reading quickly as each page is a short poem in itself. I chose a selection of fiction and non-fiction that students will not be able to resist such as sports books like Grind and a biography of Kobe Bryant. Many of my students really struggle to find books that will match their interests and reading level. I focused on finding books that are shorter and at an accessible reading level for many of these struggling readers such as Ripley's Believe It or Not series. Students can use these selections to get hooked on reading and become life-long readers. Students will be able to check out these books from our classroom library for years to come. Thank you for considering donating to our project!
